The Carolina Black Caucus represents the African American faculty & staff population at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, whose purpose is to celebrate, promote & advocate for its Black workforce. The charter of the Caucus (originally known as the Black Faculty & Staff Caucus) was signed by Dr. Charles Daye, Presiding Officer and Harold G. Wallace, Secretary/Treasurer on November 6, 1974, with a steering committee that was also comprised of Carl Smith, Elizabeth Mosby and Sonja Stone. The Caucus was founded to promote recruitment, hiring, retention, and promotion of Black and other underrepresented minority groups throughout the university. The Caucus also promoted recruitment, admissions and retention of Black, and minority students. Although there have been many advancements over the past 40+ years, the Caucus continues its legacy to be an advocate for campus-wide diversity and inclusion while fostering a sense of community for its members and stakeholders.
